Stilled Life

Published in Photography by Panos Georgiou

Many of Philip Lorca diCorcia’s photos have the quality of a painting—the subjects are posed and the light is arranged perfectly. DiCorcia’s photos seem to create moments, rather than capture them by chance, giving his photos a theatrical quality. However the artificiality does not seem accidental—it imbues banal situations with artistic value and bizarre situations with a sense of control. His work is a fascinating mix of natural and staged, familiar and uncanny.
